Botanical name -
Amorphophallus campanulatus
Description - Robusi herbaceous plant with a dull brown hemispherical and depressed corm (dia 20-25 cm) weighing few kg, and an erect solitary stem usually 96 cm -2.5 m in height bearing at the top a large solitary mottled leaf; a large termmal spadix with foul odour sprouts after 4 years; each corm produces 5-10 cormels at the end of each growing season
Chemical_Constituents- Corm : glucose, galactose, rhamnose, xylose, triacontane, lupeol, betulinic acid, stigmasterol, p-sitosterol and its palmitate, vitamins A, Bi, with Fe and Ca; Ca-oxalate crystals are abundant in the wild plants but less abundant or absent in the cultivated ones.
Uses -
Traditional use : RURAL FOLKS : use in earache, swelling of throat, breathing difficulty, pimples, constipation, cholera, haemor-rhage, septicemia, pain, kala-azar, enlarged spleen, intercostal neuralgia, pleurosis, pneumonia, puerperal fever, diarrhoea; SANTAL : {\) Powdered corm : to treat earache, throat troubles, as an ingredient of medicines for cholera and constipation; (ii) Plant-jute : in sores. AGNI PUiiANA: stomachic, tonic; AYURVEDA : Corns for piles and dysentery. Modern use: Corm : against abdominal tumours.
